Sylvia Gay Smith Shackelford, a resident of Gonzales, Louisiana, died peacefully on May 17, 2026, at the age of 86. She was born in Wager, Tennessee on November 19, 1939 to Alphonso Henry and Nona Gay Smith.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Bobby K. Shackelford; her parents; her brother Ronni; and sister Linda (“Dudda”). She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend to so many.
She is survived by her daughter, Sherlyn and husband Will Cannon; son, Richard and wife Libby Shackelford; and son, David and wife Kelly Shackleford. She had nine grandchildren, Shaddy, Kaylyn, Randi, Elizabeth, Grant, Dane, Kacie, Karlie, and Jessie. She also had eleven great grandchildren, Avery, Piper, Ellie, Maddy, Michael, Braden, Sa’Lynn, Tela, Gaige, Gino and Sydnie.
Sylvia spent her life devoted to caring for her family, friends and community. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Gonzales and served as the choir director here for over 20 years. She was also a Sunday School teacher and worship team member. Her creativity and love for decorating meant that the Church would always look beautiful; especially during the holidays. Sylvia also devoted a lot of her time to the American Cancer Society. This particular program held a special place in her heart as she was a breast cancer survivor herself. When Sylvia was not volunteering or caring for her family, she was traveling with the love of her life Bobby. They loved taking their motor home on adventures; especially to the mountains. They shared a beautiful life together and Sylvia is finally reunited with Bobby for their best adventure yet.
Visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church Gonzales, 224 West Constitution Street, Gonzales, Louisiana 70737, on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 from 10:00 am until a memorial service at 11:00 am.
