Rhonda Hartwell, 65, passed away at home on August 25, 2026, just as she wanted—at home and on her own terms.
Born and raised in the Baton Rouge area, Rhonda married Bill Hartwell in February 1981. Together, they shared more than 45 years of marriage and raised their three children, Ashley (Mike) Cassidy, Brian (Kelley) Hartwell, and Dylan (Jessica) Hartwell.
When her children were growing up, Rhonda was insanely dependable. She kept up with three kids, a household, everyone’s schedules, and all the details that somehow kept family life moving. She was loving and loyal to a fault—sassy, feisty, stubborn, and unapologetically herself. She loved her family completely, and they always knew they could count on her.
Rhonda dedicated 44 years to the United States Postal Service. She spent many years, including the latter part of her career, as the clerk at the Central Post Office. In a small community, seemingly everyone knew Rhonda. She knew her customers, talked and laughed with them, and became a familiar part of their everyday lives.
Anyone who really knew Rhonda knew she lived life her way. She enjoyed a good drink, smoked her cigarettes, and had no intention of giving them up for anyone. She was simply, unmistakably Rhonda.
Rhonda leaves behind her husband, Bill Hartwell; her children, Ashley (Mike) Cassidy and Dylan (Jessica) Hartwell; her daughter-in-law, Kelley Methvien; her grandchildren, Declan Cassidy, Brooklyn Cassidy, Rylynn Cassidy, Aiden Hartwell, Grayson Hartwell, Max Hartwell, and Isabella Hathorn; and her sister, Tracy Mathis.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Brian Hartwell, who passed away on March 3, 2020; her parents, Walter and Connie Mathis; and her brother, Darren Mathis.
Rhonda was deeply loved by her family and by so many people whose lives crossed hers over the years. She was unmistakably herself until the very end.
In the end, she got what she wanted—to be at home, with Bill, in the life they had built together.
