He is preceded in death by his wife, Cynthia Latiolais Person of St. Amant; parents, William Ernest “W.E.” Person, Jr and Leslie Ewen Person of Lafayette, LA; and best friend, Jim T. Huff, of Waterproof, LA.
Mike was born in Natchez, MS on October 1, 1952, to parents W.E. and Leslie Person. Growing up on Lake St. John and in Donaldsonville and Lafayette, LA, he was a member of the first graduating class of Acadiana High in 1970. One of “the Person boys” known across various communities and decades, he loved his brothers, sister, aunts, uncles, and cousins regardless of time, distance, and whatever water had passed under the bridge of life.
After graduating from LSU in 1974 with a degree in Health, Physical, and Safety Education and student teaching at Glen Oaks in Baton Rouge, Mike decided that teaching and coaching was not for him. He opened a lounge, Lafitte’s Landing, in his grandfather’s vacant antebellum home at the western foot of the Sunshine Bridge in St. James, LA before moving on to a career in industrial manufacturing and maintenance. In the ensuing 40 years, he would navigate some of the region’s lowest lows and highest highs – ultimately finding his place in the occupational health and safety world with PAX, Inc. and Specialized Industrial Maintenance (S.I.M.) where he built and fortified lifelong friendships that he valued and maintained long past his retirement into his last days.
Mike’s love for family, friends, animals, and the outdoors was unwavering. We may never truly know which he loved more - being absolutely alone in a deer stand or surrounded by friends and family around a pot of his famous venison sauce piquant or a batch of fresh Lake St. John fried catfish. He loved a boat ride and a beer after a long day of piddling. He loved sharing Lake St. John with scores of family and friends over the decades, and in his retirement years, he shared many hunts, beers, and boat rides with his best friend and fiancée, Tammy.
A 9 AM visitation will precede an 11 AM memorial service Friday, January 9th at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 15710 LA-16, French Settlement, LA 70733.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations made in Mike’s name to Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
