"Poppa Swole”
March 26, 1958 – February 5, 2026
Michael Ryan Riley, affectionately known as Poppa Swole, was a New Orleans native and a lifelong New Orleans Saints fan. He was a dedicated employee of Shell Oil for more than 36 years and, above all, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and family man.
Michael lived as a model of virtue with a stoic presence—quietly strong, steady, and grounded. He moved through life with a calm strength that needed no explanation and faced adversity with resilience. He believed character was revealed through consistency, restraint, and how one carried responsibility for the people they loved. He did not seek attention or approval; people simply felt safe in his presence.
To the untrained eye, Michael’s purpose may have seemed simple. To those who understand the deeper meaning of life, it was clear: to pass on his values of good virtue, quiet strength, and wisdom to his children, so they could continue to illuminate the light his presence and influence brought into the world.
An avid swimmer all his life, Michael loved long beach days with his wife, Patricia, often spending hours treading water together. He enjoyed an unconventional garden, guided by good soil, sunshine, and laid-back New Orleans patience. Like any true New Orleans grandfather, Poppa Swole loved fishing, camping, playing in the waves, and spoiling his grandbabies rotten.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Reilly Riley; his father, Maurice Riley Jr.; and his brother, Kevin Patrick Riley.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Patricia Robicheaux Riley; his children, Chad Edward Riley, Jeanne Marie Riley, Gary Michael Riley, and Christopher Maurice Riley; his canine and feline companions, Lakia and Riley aka Minnie; his siblings, Regina L. Patterson, Colleen Riley, Maureen Dolese, Patrick Riley, Peggy Lulich, and Rae DeWoody; and ten adoring grandchildren.
Per Poppa Swole’s request, a Celebration of Life will be held at his brother Patrick’s brewery in Mid-City, Second Line Brewery, on February 21st from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Children and pets are welcome.
