Michael w. Howes, 82, of Baton Rouge, LA, died Saturday, November 22, 2025. He was born December 31, 1942 to Emmett and Mildred (Pittman) Howes. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Eleanor Barnett Howes. He is survived by his son, Rev. Michael (Sue) A. Howes, his grandchildren Michael (Cece) R. Howes and Emily Hanna Howes, his brother, Terry (Sue) Howes, and his nieces and nephews.
Howes was a graduate of Louisiana State University (BFA) and the University of Alabama (MFA). A sculptor, Howes served on the art faculty of Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, LA for more than thirty years, serving as department chair and retiring as a full professor. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Baton Rouge, serving as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher for both adults and children. He was associated with the Baton Rouge Gallery, where he also served as a board member. He also served as a board member at University View Academy. He loved his family, his students, and making art.
A memorial service will be held December 12, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Baton Rouge at 2PM with family visitation at 1PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Baptist Church of Baton Rouge or the Baton Rouge Gallery Center for Contemporary Art.
