Larry Ortego, father, husband, brother, and friend, died peacefully, surrounded by family, Wednesday, August 20th, 2025. He was 77.
Born on April 4, 1948, in Lake Charles, LA to Louis and Emma Ortego, Larry grew up with a love for the outdoors, quickly learning how to hunt and fish as a child. In 1966, Larry enlisted in the United States Navy, serving on the USS Kittyhawk aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War. While enlisted, Larry married the love of his life, Carol Granger in 1967. Together they raised two children and were blessed with 5 grandchildren. Larry thoroughly enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and always had a freezer full of deer sausage, redfish and trout. Larry was known for making some of the best deer and sausage jambalaya and fried trout along with countless other dishes that he perfected over the years, sharing them with family and friends. Larry could often be found with a cup of coffee in hand, ready to tell stories over and over (and over) again to anyone willing to listen. Larry’s knack for storytelling and humor came naturally to him, serving him well in his career in sales with NCR for over 30 years. After raising his family in Baton Rouge, LA, Larry set up residence in St Francisville with his wife, Carol, allowing himself plenty of opportunities to continue hunting during his retirement. It was also during this time that Larry, (not a cat person) rescued and fell in love with Dixie the Cat allowing her to live a long and peaceful life at their home.
The Ortego family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Louisiana War Veterans Home in Jackson, Louisiana for providing care and support during his final days. Special thanks go out to all the resident veterans and staff in Jackson who lined the hallway to say their final farewell to Larry.
Larry is proceeded in death by his parents, Louis and Emma Ortego; sister, Kate Ortego Thomas; in-laws Floyd and Rose Granger; and nephews, Darren Thomas and Leland White. Larry is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carol Ortego; sons Shane Ortego (Jenny) and Kent Ortego (Kylie); grandchildren, Savannah Broussard (Wade), Olivia Ortego, Ella Ortego, Emma Ortego and Jack Ortego; and a host of other loving family members and dear friends. Special Thanks to Phyllis (sister) and Tom White and Orin (brother) and Dorothy Ortego for keeping Larry company during his last moments on Earth.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Larry on Saturday, August 30th, 2025 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in St Francisville. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am until time of Mass at 11:00 am.
