Julius Joseph Hubbell, II

A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of "JJ" Julius Joseph Hubbell II will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at St. Philip Catholic Church in Vacherie, Louisiana. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., with the Mass beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the church mausoleum.

JJ was born on September 10 in Vacherie and passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Friday, July 24, 2026, at the age of 79.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Carolyn "Tuttie" Hubbell, who devotedly cared for him throughout his illness; his daughters, Stephanie Juarez (Giovanni) and Stacy Hubbell (Chad Dugas); his cherished granddaughter, "Gigi" Giuliana Juarez; and his step-grandsons, Gavin and Ethan Dugas. He is also survived by his siblings, Julia Ann Schexnayder, Francis "Sonny" Hubbell Jr. (Loretta), and Virginia Roussel (Doyle); his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Raymond Chauvin Jr. (Jane), Wayne Chauvin, Richard "Dicky" Chauvin (Bobby), Debbie Borne (Sidney), Glenda Rodrigue (Harold), and Rhonda Chauvin; along with a host of beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Julia Hubbell; his parents-in-law, Raymond and Kathleen Chauvin; his grandparents, Julius and Virginia Hubbell; his godparents, Yvonne Duhé and Ernest Zeringue; his brothers-in-law, David Chauvin and Henry Schexnayder; and his sister-in-law, Dianne Chauvin.

JJ retired at the age of 55 as a machinist from Monsanto in Luling. A master of his craft, he was known for his precision, attention to detail, and pursuit of perfection. One of his proudest accomplishments was his work on the Apollo/Saturn V program at the Michoud Assembly Facility. In 1969, he received the Distinguished Service Roll of Honor for Outstanding Workmanship for his contributions to the first manned lunar landing. He took great pride in sharing this story, and specifically that his award is now housed in the Smithsonian Institution Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. He was also an Honorary Member of the Knights of Columbus.

JJ found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening, fixing just about anything, and lending a helping hand to anyone in need. Above all, he had a passion for raising, training, and running rabbit dogs (beagles), and his dogs earned numerous championships and field trial awards over the years.

Although he lived with vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease, JJ continued to recognize everyone he loved. He treasured telling and listening to stories, both old and new, and never lost the sharp wit, genuine spirit, patience, and happiness that made him who he was. He had a remarkable gift for turning chance encounters with strangers into lifelong friendships that crossed generations and backgrounds. If you were lucky enough to have met JJ, chances are you have a story about him—and he probably had one about you, too. Those stories reflect the countless lives he touched with his kindness, humor, patience, generous heart, and willingness to help others. His kindness, happiness, and love of life will live on in all who knew and loved him.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Haydel Memorial Hospice (Patty, Nathaniel & Debra), Dr. Bryce Casteigne, and especially the village of family, friends, and devoted religious servants whose unwavering support, prayers, and visits brought comfort throughout JJ's journey.
