Joseph Leon Dennis

Joseph Leon Dennis, a 30-year resident of the St. Amant community, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2023, at the age of 87. He was born in the farming community of Millerstown, KY, on January 30, 1936, the fourth of five children. Leon’s life was characterized by an unwavering dedication to his family, particularly his beloved mother and later his wife, Lou. Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Dillard Dennis and Ona Logsdon Dennis McMurphey, as well as his wife, Virgie Louella Brown-Dennis. He also rejoins his siblings in the afterlife: Loreen Dennis-Solis, Coreen Dennis-Beaucoudray, Russell Dillard Dennis, and Alvin Hubert Dennis. Leon's legacy endures through the many lives he touched, including numerous adoring nieces, nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews. Leon's life was a tapestry woven with diverse experiences. He served his country as a member of the Merchant Marines, and he retired as a respected Maintenance Supervisor at the Ciba-Geigy Chemical plant in St. Gabriel. Leon's true passion involved the art of woodworking. His expert craftsmanship was renowned throughout the community, leaving behind dozens of beautiful creations that will be a legacy for generations to come. When Leon wasn't honing his woodworking skills, he found solace in the great outdoors, indulging in his lifelong love for hunting and fishing. But nothing compared to his unwavering love for his wife, Louella, whom he met in New Orleans through his sister Coreen. Their love story spanned six incredible decades, filled with devotion, laughter, and countless memories. Leon and Lou loved to share their home, which became a magnet for family gatherings. His dry wit and sarcastic banter were the hallmarks of his charismatic personality. As we bid farewell to Joseph Leon “Uncle” Dennis, we invite friends and family to join us in celebrating his life. The funeral service will be held at Sorrento Baptist Church, 8275 Main Street, on Friday, October 13. Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m., followed by a short service at 11:00 a.m. Entombment will take place at Holy Rosary Catholic Church Mausoleum in St. Amant immediately following the service.
