Joseph Calvin Cannon. Sr, born October 18, 1946, peacefully passed away at 5:42 am on Monday, October 13, 2025. A native of Indiana, his family moved to the WestBank of New Orleans when he was a young child. He eventually settled in Ascension Parish where he worked and raised his family.
He spent most of his working career as an industrial sandblaster and painter at many of the refineries and bridges that serve us today. He was also an avid amateur radio operator (KA5RNH was often heard bellowing through the family home at all hours of the night as he chased another country to talk to) and enjoyed collecting and restoring vintage license plates. Although, sitting outside with a cigarette, a Coke and chatting with friends was probably his favorite pastime especially since he never met a stranger.
He was the beloved father of daughters Billie Joe Cannon Ashe (with Kelvin Ashe), Sherrie JoAnn Rhodes (with husband Ronald Rhodes), son James Cannon (with wife Kim Centanni). He was the older brother to Mary Lou Simpkins (with husband Ron Simpkins) and Sammy Stroup (with wife Cindy Stroup). His grandchildren were Bridget Lizana, James Bergeron, Chloe Cannon, and Gabi Masters, with great grandchildren Kaylee Ladner and Cannon Lizana. He also left behind many nephews and nieces along with the mother of his children whom he still dearly loved, Brenda Cannon.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Gannon, Alice and Bert Stroup, son Joseph Calvin Cannon, Jr, sister Peggy Jo Hunnicutt, nephew Michael Cannon and nieces Stormie Hunnicutt and Ashley Stroup. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff at Ascension Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the care and love they have provided over the last 5 years. Lastly, thank you to all of his and our friends for all of the kindness and love throughout a lifetime.
