“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.”

2 Timothy 4:7

Born in Jackson, MS, a native and resident of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away peacefully at home on June 11, 2026, at the age of 70. Johnny was a 1974 graduate of Istrouma High School and attended LSU. He was a union ironworker with Local 623, salesman and plant superintendent for CMC Capitol Steel, and purchasing agent for Nugent Steel.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 46 years, Madeleine “Maddie” Mix Varner; two daughters, Meagan Michel Varner (fiancé, Gage Chandler) and Jessica Rita Varner; Pop’s grandson, Camden “Cam” Michael Cox; sisters, Marsha Causey (Jim) and Marla New; brother, Jimmy Varner (Becky); sister-in-law, Paula R. Mix; brother-in-law, Edward M. Landry; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Preceded in death by his parents, James M. Varner, Sr. and Martha Vinson Varner; father and mother-in-law, G.M. Mix, Jr. and Janet N. Mix; sister-in-law, Susan Mix Landry; brothers-in-law, Michael G. Mix and Berney New.

Johnny will always be remembered as a man who loved the outdoors, worked hard, and lived for time with family and friends! He loved time spent on the water, hunting, fishing, cutting grass, and tinkering with his yellow 1978 CJ7 Jeep. He was friendly, laid back, and a good, kind soul always willing to lend a helping hand.

His wishes were to be cremated and laid to rest. He did not want a funeral or funeral services. He did not want anyone to mourn regarding his passing, but to remember him as a life well-lived! Johnny and Maddie have had a great ride for 46 years, two beautiful girls, and a grandson who is our heart! So blessed!
