Jeremy Philip "Jere" Schiro was born on February 1, 1962 and passed away unexpectedly at Baton Rouge General Medical Center on April 28, 2026 due to a pulmonary embolism during a routine surgery. He was 64 years old and a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart Catholic School, Baton Rouge Magnet High School, and Louisiana State University. He later retired as a captain with the Baton Rouge Police Department after more than three decades of service to his community, receiving the Medal of Merit Award in 1994.
Jeremy had a great sense of humor and could make anyone laugh, especially when he was telling his most favorite joke: a perpetual, lifelong quest to get back to his original weight of 8 lbs, 6 oz. One of his favorite hobbies was fishing, and during his retirement he spent many happy days out on his boat with friends and family members. According to some legends, he even caught some fish! Jeremy also loved spending time with his beloved pets.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas Philip Schiro and Rita May Schiro, as well as his grandparents and numerous aunts and uncles. He is survived by his loving family members including his wife, Melanie, his daughter Angela Schiro Laborde and husband Nicholas Laborde, son Anthony Schiro and grandson Julian Schiro, son Richard Schiro and wife Allie Schiro, and daughter Stephanie Schiro and fiancé Joshua Gaudin.
He is also survived by his brothers Michael Schiro and wife Lee Anne, Tommy Schiro and wife Linda, Pat Schiro and wife Sherry, and his sister Jackie Schiro along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. We would be remiss if we did not also include that his legacy continues in the form of his two beloved chihuahuas Daisy and Pixie, as well as his two cats Gus and Cookie.
He is already greatly missed by all of us, and we hope you will join us in celebrating his life. Jeremy loved making rosaries and if you have one that he made for you, we invite you to bring it with you for when we pray the rosary.
Services will take place Monday May 4, 2026 beginning at 9 AM with a rosary and visitation until a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM, celebrated by Fr. Eddie Martin, all occurring at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church (2250 Main Street Baton Rouge, LA 70802-3144), with interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park.
At his request, pallbearers will be:
Anthony Schiro, Richard Schiro, Nick Coxe, Carey Coxe, David Shultz, John Valenti, Thomas Schiro, and Jay Rachal.
Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Fontenot, Paul Lefebvre, Brian Crochet, Joe Mapes, Nicholas Laborde, and Joshua Gaudin.
His children would also like to thank their mom, Sherri Schiro, for her love and support.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your local animal shelter or animal rescue organization, as well as considering adopting a rescue animal for your family.
