Jean Bernice Mcguire

Jean Bernice McGuire passed away peacefully, at her home after a valiant fight with cancer, on August 4, 2021, at the age of 68. Born February 8, 1953, Jean grew up in Birmingham, MI. She attended Pierce Elementary and was a 1971 graduate of Seaholm High School in Birmingham. Upon graduation she attended the University of Michigan where she earned a BA in Sociology in 1975. She later earned a MS and PhD in Organization Theory from Cornell University’s New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations (1979 and 1982, respectively). She held faculty positions at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (1981-1987) and Concordia University (1987-2006) before joining the Rucks Department of Management in 2006 as the William W. Rucks IV Endowed Chair and Professor of Management. During her time at LSU, she distinguished herself as a productive scholar, dedicated teacher, and mentor for graduate students. She was a welcome co-author in many of her works and those that worked with her found her an insightful and dedicated colleague. Among her various academic roles, she was always helpful and supportive. She served for many years as graduate advisor for the LSU Rucks Department of Management department’s PhD program and, more recently, as Chair of the Rucks Department of Management. Jean’s professionalism and kindness to fellow faculty and students made her a valued colleague. Outside of her professional life, Jean also approached life with zest and commitment. Almost, every morning Jean could be seen exercising around the LSU lakes near her Baton Rouge home. She loved to tend her garden and grow tomatoes in the spring. She loved to travel and many will remember her as a trusted and welcome traveling companion whether it be to Europe (especially France), the U.S. or to more exotic tropical locales. She always had a good story of her experiences alone, with others, or with Margaux, her Bichon Frise rescue dog and loyal companion. Jean will be missed by all. She is preceded in death by her parents, James Law McGuire and Bernice Garnet Wolfe McGuire; paternal grandparents, James McGuire and Maude E. Law; maternal grandparents, Wilson and Jean Wolfe. Special thanks to all of Jean’s neighbors, friends and co-workers who cared for Jean in her final days. Friends want to extend sincere thanks to Home Instead and all of the staff at Louisiana Hospice for providing excellent care. Jean never liked being the center of attention and per her wishes there will be no services.
