Howard Maurice Berthelot was born June 15, 1935, in Whitehall, Louisiana. He died peacefully on May 19, 2026, at his home in Gonzales, Louisiana. He was 90.
For 71 years, Howard walked through life beside his beloved wife, Gloria Helen Aime Berthelot. Together, they raised their children, built a faithful and loving home, and passed down a legacy of loyalty, commitment, and devotion to family that continues through the generations.
Howard began his professional career in industry at Burnside Terminal, followed by Texaco in Convent, and later retired from management at Marathon in Garyville. At work, Howard was a trusted leader, always helping his team achieve the highest levels of success. He was well known and respected for being fair.
Howard was a lifelong outdoorsman. He shared that passion with his sons, son-in-law Ricky, grandsons, and countless hunting and fishing buddies throughout the years. In addition, he was an avid golfer and loved playing weekly with his golf buddies, sons, and son-in-law.
To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was lovingly known as Paw Paw. They will forever remember him for making them laugh and giggle, for including them in countless outdoor adventures, and even for the 4:00 a.m. wake-up calls to go fishing.
Howard is survived by his children, Kent and JoAnn Berthelot, Kathi and Lane Stout, Laurie and Ricky Hoffman, and Clay and Wanda Berthelot; his grandchildren, Christian and Josie Berthelot, Mitchel Courville, Dylan Berthelot, Tiffany Mouch Vincent, Misty and David Millet, Trey and Brandice Mouch, Clint and Brandy Hoffman, Cody and Destiny Hoffman, Ashley and Sam Denton, and Chase and Emily Berthelot; his sister-in-law, Barbara Villar; 19 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gloria Helen Aime Berthelot; his father, Amaluce Morrise Berthelot; his mother, Mildred Brown Villar; and his stepfather; Moise Villar. Howard was blessed to be the last surviving sibling among all of his father’s and mother’s children. His siblings were; Gerald Villar and his wife, Rose Marie, Robert Villar, Lionel Villar, Lorena Morrow, Odelia Hoover, Veronicque “Noon” Delatte, Dorothy “Dot” Lear, Robert Berthelot Sr., Lloyd Berthelot, Lionel Berthelot, and Suzanne Priest.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to his private caregivers, Reba LeBlanc, Debra Samuel, and Adrienne Oatis. They also thank the Amedisys Home Health staff, Kelly English, RN, and the entire team for their compassion and devoted care.
Visitation will be held May 28, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Amant, followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m., celebrated by Father Matthew Lorrain.
