Gregory Walker Swanson, beloved husband, father, friend and lifelong public servant, went to be with the Lord on March 23, 2026. Born on March 25, 1946, in Roanoke, Virginia. As a longtime resident of St. Amant, Louisiana, he built a life defined by hard work and a heart for his church and community.
Greg dedicated much of his life to the open road as a professional over-the-road truck driver, a career in which he took great pride. When he wasn’t behind the wheel of a rig, he was likely serving his local community. He was a dedicated member of the St. Amant Volunteer Fire Department for more than 35 years, providing a steady hand and a brave heart to those in need. His passion for service also extended to the Civil Air Patrol, where he shared his time and skills.
A faithful member of Gonzales Baptist Temple, Greg was known for his bright smile and outgoing personality. He found great joy in the simple things: a good cup of coffee, an intense game night with friends and family, or getting his hands greasy working on trucks and cars. He enjoyed the companionship of his three dogs, with Ginger affectionately regarded as his favorite.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Watson “Bill” Swanson; his mother, Irabelle Walker Swanson; and his brother, DeWitt Francis Swanson.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Doreen Pourciau Swanson; his daughters, Tammy Johnson (Jamie) and Michell McNeill (Keith), both of North Carolina; his grandchildren, Johnathan Cacioppo (Katie) of Florida, Brianna Cacioppo of Virginia, and Austin Wright and Brandon Wright of North Carolina; and his great-grandchildren, Brodie, Myava, Sage, and Zander. He is also survived by many honorary nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
A celebration of life service will be held at a later time.
