Flay Mitchell Reid, 89, passed away on April 23, 2026.
Born June 24, 1936, in Lowell, North Carolina, he spent much of his early life in North Carolina before graduating high school at 16. He attended Mars Hill College and later served in the U.S. Navy, where he trained as a pilot before being honorably discharged in 1956.
After his military service, Flay built a successful and respected career. He worked in Charlotte before relocating to Columbia, South Carolina, where he became a realtor for over two decades. Known for his integrity and dedication, he later served as a special investigator with the South Carolina Real Estate Commission. Even in retirement, Flay remained committed to his profession, teaching at the South Carolina Real Estate School for several years.
He is survived by his devoted wife of over four decades, Joyce Reid, whom he married in
1978. He is also survived by three daughters, Beth Hunsaker (Joe), Susan Freeman (Mark), and Shanna Drescher (Victor); six grandchildren; and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Moena Reid, and several siblings.
A man of simple pleasures, Flay enjoyed golfing with close friends, playing tennis in his younger years, and watching sports of all kinds. Above all, he cherished time spent with Joyce, whether traveling or relaxing by the ocean.
Flay will be remembered for his steady presence, generous spirit, and the deep love he had for his family and friends.
