Emile Christian Rolfs III

Emile Christian Rolfs III, born in Baton Rouge in 1943, passed away peacefully at home on May 24, 2026. 

A graduate of Baton Rouge High School, Class of 1961, Emile attended LSU, where he joined the Sigma Chi Fraternity and formed lifelong friendships. He later earned his J.D. from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1967 and began a distinguished legal career with a two-year clerkship for U.S. District Judge E. Gordon West, whom he greatly admired. 

Throughout his career, Emile was frequently appointed by both federal and state courts to serve as a special master in complex litigation, a role he found especially meaningful and rewarding. 

Deeply devoted to his community, Emile served as a vestryman at St. James Episcopal Church and as president of the City Club of Baton Rouge. He also proudly served on the boards of the Louisiana Museum of Art and Magnolia Mound Plantation. 

He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Susan Dietrich Rolfs; his three daughters, who were his greatest pride and joy: Susannah Rolfs Elliott and husband Jeff of Charleston, South Carolina; Charlotte Elizabeth Rolfs of New Orleans; and Ainsley Rolfs Grigsby and husband Todd of Baton Rouge. 

He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, William Lane Grigsby, Crawford Emile Grigsby, Oliver Steele Grigsby, Samuel Johnson Elliott, and Susan Claire Elliott; his brother, James Rolfs and wife Mary; his sister, Kay Rolfs White; three nephews; and his sister-in-law, Kristine Dietrich Keating. 

An avid reader with a deep appreciation for music and intellectual inquiry, Emile pursued knowledge throughout his life. He especially cherished time spent with his grandchildren, who found comfort and ease in his presence. A true Southern gentleman, he carried himself with steadfast integrity, quiet grace, and a distinctive, thoughtful style.

A visitation will be held on Monday, June 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sigma Chi Scholarship through the LSU Foundation or to St. James Episcopal Church.
