Dr. Thomas John Waters, affectionately known as Tommy or simply Tom, passed away on October 2, 2026, at the age of 82. Born in Alton, Illinois, Tom was a proud alumnus of Marquette High School. He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he met his beloved wife, Joyce, while both were pursuing their master's degrees. He continued his academic journey at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he earned his Ph.D. in psychology, an achievement that remained a source of great personal pride throughout his life.

An accomplished psychologist and educator, Tom devoted his professional life to psychology and teaching, serving in numerous capacities throughout his career. After moving to Louisiana, he served as Director of Psychological Services at East Louisiana State Hospital, overseeing clinical programs, staff development, supervision and research. His career also included many years as a school psychologist with East Baton Rouge Parish Schools. He began teaching at the college level at Louisiana State University in the 1980s and later taught at Southern University and Baton Rouge Community College. He particularly enjoyed working with college students and sharing his knowledge and passion for psychology.

Always a performer at heart, Tom's lifelong love of music began at an early age. By high school, he was performing piano recitals, beginning a musical journey that would span more than seven decades. An accomplished pianist, organist and singer, he especially cherished his time performing in Gilbert and Sullivan productions at Baton Rouge Little Theater. His musical talents and deep Catholic faith came together through his service as adult choir director and music coordinator at St. Louis King of France and St. Thomas More Catholic Churches. He took particular joy in organizing Christmas programs and choir concerts and never missed an opportunity to entertain family and friends, sharing his love of music and his natural flair for performing.

A devout Catholic with a theatrical spirit and a wonderful enthusiasm for life, Tom loved his church and its traditions. He often spoke fondly of the Catholic sisters who taught him in high school. Though known for their strict discipline, the sisters adored him, and he remembered them with great affection throughout his life.

Exceptionally intelligent, creative and artistic, Tom possessed an insatiable curiosity, a lifelong enthusiasm for learning and a love of spirited discussion. Naturally outgoing, he never met a stranger and rarely missed an opportunity to strike up a conversation. He also had a generous spirit, was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, and had a special love for animals, particularly his beloved dogs. He was passionate about Louisiana history and had an extraordinary fascination with the Titanic. His background in psychology gave him a unique interest in the human stories behind dramatic historical events and their psychological significance.

Above all, Tom cherished his family and the wonderful life he shared with his beloved wife, Joyce. Married for nearly 60 years, they shared a love of history, music, theater, travel and the arts. Together, they enjoyed cultural events, lifelong learning and exploring new interests. They nurtured their faith as parishioners of St. George Catholic Church and through its Golden Oaks Ministry. Their marriage was one of love, companionship and devotion, with Joyce lovingly caring for Tom until her passing in May 2024.

Family gatherings were especially dear to Tom. He delighted in entertaining visiting relatives and introducing them to Louisiana's rich history, culture and traditions. He also took particular joy in helping his daughter, Wendy, plan the music for her wedding to Jim. Birthdays and holidays were celebrated in grand fashion, with Tom often at the piano entertaining family and friends. Christmas sing-alongs were a cherished tradition, with Tom enthusiastically making sure everyone joined in, whether they wanted to or not—even the family dogs! His grandson, James, brought him tremendous joy, and Tom delighted in sharing these family traditions with him and watching him grow into a young man. His love of music never faded, and he continued singing until his final days. The music he shared and the memories he created will live on through the family he loved so dearly.

Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joyce Elaine Bates Waters, who passed away on May 5, 2024, and his parents, Henry "Tom" Waters and Mary Jane Beiser Waters.

He is survived by his only child, Wendy Waters Boyle (Jim), and his grandson, James Boyle, all of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; his sister, Mary Wauneta Waters; his brothers, Marc Waters (Decia) and Mike Waters (Julene); and his nieces, Lauren and Molly, all of Alton, Illinois.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 9, 2026, at St. George Catholic Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Funeral Mass at noon. Tom will be laid to rest alongside his beloved wife, Joyce, in the St. George Mausoleum.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Holly Court Assisted Living and Clarity Hospice for the loving care, compassion, kindness and support they provided Tom and his family. Their care and dedication will always be remembered and appreciated.
