David Henry Major, 70, a lifelong resident of Pointe Coupee Parish, passed away from cancer at his home on January 30th, surrounded by the place and people he loved most. David left us sooner than we would have liked—though anyone who knew him might say he was rarely early for anything, preferring to move through life in his own way and on his own time.
David and his wife, Fran Watson Major, shared nearly 40 years of marriage. He was a devoted father to Amelia (Judson Stevens) and Ben (Jordyn Roppolo), and a loving grandfather to Benton and Masyn Major and Will and Grey Stevens.
Along with his wife, children, and grandchildren, David is survived by his siblings, John (Louise), Gail, and Rita “Noo” Major; his sister-in-law Diane Major; his in-laws, Tony (Deb) Watson, Joe (Tina) Watson, and mother-in-law Joyce Watson. He now joins those who passed before him: his parents, Oliver and Rita Major; his brothers, Joe and Bob Major; infant sister, Giselle Major; and his father-in-law, Willie Watson.
David loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spent countless hours on his property, especially around his pond. He had a natural talent for mechanics and fixing things, often seeing value and possibility where others saw junk. Whether it was a rusted engine or a broken tool, he had a stubborn brilliance for making things work again.
A farmer and cook through and through, David's generosity was often found on a dinner plate or in a bag of homegrown produce. He took immense pride in growing and cooking food to feed his family and friends, ensuring no one ever left his home hungry.
David will be remembered for his resourcefulness, his dry sense of humor, and his deep love for his family. He leaves behind many stories, lessons, and memories that will continue to be shared for years to come.
No services are planned at this time. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to a favorite charity or to Pointe Coupee Hospice, 350 Hospital Road, New Roads, LA 70762.
