Daniel Patrick Dumas, 78, of Maurepas, Louisiana, passed peacefully, at his home, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
Dan was born May 13, 1947, in Rumford, Maine, to Patrick and Theresa Dumas. He spent his early years in the rugged wilderness of the North as his family worked in the timber industry established by his paternal grandfather, Arthur Dumas. Their life took them from Oxbow Township, Maine, to Woburn, Quebec, and eventually to Rangeley, Maine, shaping Dan’s lifelong appreciation for hard work, the outdoors, and self-reliance.
Early in his career, Dan traveled the world through his work, including time in South Africa, one of his favorite experiences. Eventually, life led him to DeRidder, Louisiana, where he met the love of his life, Vivian. There, he put down roots, became the proud father of two daughters, and together they built both a home and a life centered on family.
An avid outdoorsman, Dan enjoyed hunting, horseback riding, fishing, boating, riding motorcycles, and traveling with Vivian. Some of his happiest moments were the simplest ones: sitting in a rocking chair on the back porch, watching the water, and taking in the beauty of nature.
Dan worked in Construction Management for more than 40 years and loved his work so much that it took him three tries to finally retire. He approached his career the same way he approached life—with determination, discipline, and deep respect for excellence. He valued a thorough debate and took great pride in mentoring young professionals. Dan often reminded them, “Our industry is small, and your most valuable asset is your name—never do anything to compromise it.” Dan lived by those words, holding himself to the highest standards and expecting the same from those around him.
Known for being meticulous and particular—sometimes very particular, Dan believed that if something was worth doing, it was worth doing right the first time. He also had a dry sense of humor and a teasing spirit reserved for friends and those he loved most.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Vivian; his daughters, Tara Schwing and husband, Chris, and Rebekah Darbonne and husband, Joe; and his four grandchildren, Grace, Henry, Beau, and Anna Kate.
Becoming a grandfather was one of the greatest blessings of Dan’s life. His grandchildren softened him, revealing a tender side that made those moments with them even more special. Nothing made him prouder than watching them grow and thrive.
He is also survived by his siblings, Phil, Louise, Michael, Patti, and David. He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Theresa Dumas.
A private Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in French Settlement, Louisiana, with a small gathering to follow.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate team at Audubon Hospice for the care, comfort, and dignity they provided in Dan’s final days, guiding him peacefully into the arms of Jesus.
In lieu of flowers, Dan asked that you honor his memory by gathering with those you love—share a great meal, pour a drink, and tell a colorful tale as he so often did. And if you’re able, throw in a moose call in honor of Gagnon, the Champion Moose Caller.
He worked hard, loved fiercely, debated passionately, and left this world exactly as he lived in it—with strength, dignity, and a story worth telling.
