Listen to Obituary

Byron “Dale” Spears was born on June 1st, 1956, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on June 30th, 2026, at the age of 70, he peacefully transitioned from his residence in Walker into his heavenly home to live eternally in the presence of his Father God.

Known to many as “Pawpaw” Dale was a devoted family man who never met a stranger. He found his greatest joy out on the water, rod in hand or gathered around a campfire surrounded by family. Throughout the years, his home was always open to anyone who needed a place to stay. Family was never far from his side. Whether it was a fishing or camping trip, lending a helping hand, loaning his belongings, fixing bicycles, going out to eat, or sharing conversations beneath the carport, Dale gave of himself in every way that he knew how.

For many years, Dale dedicated himself to coaching young athletes in Walker. Coach Dale always went above and beyond to prepare them for future success. His love for sports never faded, as he passionately coached LSU and the New Orleans Saints from his recliner through the TV screen . His impact reached far beyond the ball fields, leaving an enduring mark on families throughout Livingston Parish.

Left to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy is his lifelong best friend, Debra Kay; their children, June Rene Spears, Carrie Spears May and son in law Shawn May, Timmy Dale Spears and wife Jennifer; and his beloved “boys,” Junior and Cooper, the two faithful Boxers who rarely left his side; His 10 grandchildren and 7 Great .

In 1993, Dale’s third generation began and quickly grew with his grandchildren that he stepped up into as a father role when needed. They are Gaven Dale Sibley and wife Lauren; Allysa Sibley Ellenberger and husband Ashdon; Alexis Lafleur; Kailin May; Kaira May Sullivan and husband Conner; Brice May; Bailor May; Kamryn Spears; Rowyn Spears; and Ava Spears.

In 2012, Dale’s fourth generation began, continuing his legacy through his great-grandchildren Landon Dale and Masynn Sibley, who grew up right next door to him, Aydan and Asher “Taz” Ellenberger, Jay and Hudson Hollifield, and Sadie May Sullivan

There are countless others who will remember Dale’s generous heart, big personality, and tell many stories that came with knowing him. Among those are his heart sons, Brent Lafleur and Daniel Thompson; his baby brother, Jeff Spears; step-dad William Wagner, many family members and friends; and his cousins, Jimmy Webb; and Warren and Deven Cavalier, who made sure he knew the love and acceptance of his Father God through the blood and sacrifice of his personal savior Christ Jesus.

Dale was welcomed into Heaven by his mother, Gertrude Wagner; his in-laws, Ed and Vera Chauncey; his brothers, Mike Spears, Leslie David Spears, and Kenneth Charles Wagner; his beloved fur babies, Sugar and Coon; and his Uncle Kenny, no doubt waiting with fishing poles in hand. Most importantly, he was welcomed home by his Lord Jesus.

While our hearts grieve the loss of a father, Pawpaw, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew, coach, and friend, we find comfort in knowing that his faith has become sight and He now lives beyond time, sorrow, and pain . His legacy of generosity, strength, and devotion and commitment to family will continue to be passed from generation to generation.
