Alvin was a millwright by trade for over 60 years. He was known as the hardest working man, a title he earned through decades of commitment to his craft. Education and faith were important to him; he was baptized at Holy Rosary Catholic Church at a young age and graduated from St. Amant High School.
His hobbies and passions were many. He loved gardening, planting trees and shrubs, bringing life and beauty to the spaces around him. Alvin spent many years building small block Chevy engines, rear ends, and transmissions. He enjoyed racing his 1966 Chevy II Nova, showing a spirited side to his personality. During the last 25 years of his life, he found great joy dancing to his favorite swamp pop music, a pastime he cherished deeply.
Alvin is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Theresa Bateman. Together, they built a strong and loving family. His children—Dana Melancon (Kayli), Amber Hill (Byron), Rickey Melancon, and Troy Melancon—carry on his legacy. Alvin also leaves behind his brothers Jerry (Bo) Bateman, Roger Bateman, and Troy Bateman. His many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, and nephews will remember him fondly and carry forward his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John B. Bateman and Virginia Bateman; his sister, Wanda Mae Hedges; brothers John C. Bateman; and sons Kerry Melancon and Danny Melancon.
Alvin’s life was a testament to hard work, love for family, and the simple joys found in nature and music. His memory will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
