Johnny Loyd Sumrall

Johnny Loyd Sumrall was born October 9, 1936 and passed away on October 27, 2022.  John was a man of deep faith who served people and shared God’s love for them wherever he went. He is now with his Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. He passed away after a short stay in Clarity Hospice of Baton Rouge.

Services celebrating his life will be held at South Baton Rouge Presbyterian Church (933 Staring Lane, Baton Rouge, LA) on Sunday, October 30.  Visitation is from 2-4 pm and the service is at 4:00.

John was a member of Park Forest Baptist Church for over 45 years and then Istrouma Baptist for the last few years.  He faithfully served the Lord as a deacon, on numerous committees, as a Sunday School Teacher, going on mission trips and wearing his trademark baseball caps with the good news of God’s love stitched on them.

He was happily married to his high school sweetheart, Beth, for 59 years. Together they raised five children: Randy, Rhonda, Rebecca, Rick and Rachel – all of whom have trusted Jesus Christ as Savior & Lord, and they are actively serving in their local churches.  John was so proud of his family and enjoyed each of his grandchildren: Jodie (husband Will), Ian, Elizabeth (husband Kyle), George, Joshua, Stephen, Charity, James, Nathaniel, Jonathan, John, Grace and Benjamin; and his great-grandchildren: Noah, Jude, Sarah, Avalene, Abigail, Kerrigan, Elijah and Ellamae.

John enjoyed serving his community through holding positions in the Lion’s Club and Park Forest Civic Association.  He was always looking for opportunities to serve where he lived.

He is preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Harvey Sumrall; parents Johnny (JE) and Letha Smith Sumrall; siblings Vertice Stafford, Laverne Sumrall, Haskell Sumrall, and Myrl Sumrall.  He is survived by his sister; Virginia McKenzie and sister-in-law, Verbie Sumrall and 5 children Randy Sumrall (Julie), Rhonda Sloneker (Mike), Rebecca Moore, Rick Sumrall, and Rachel Bass (Bill); 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grand children.
