Randolph Louis Smith, Jr

Randolph Louis Smith, Jr. passed away on October 11, 2022, in Gonzales, Louisiana at the age of 87. Randy was born in Houlka, Mississippi on August 31, 1935, to Randolph & Gussie Smith. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Dorothy “Dottie” Smith, five children Karen “KK” Owen, Stephanie (Danny) Musso, Debbie (John) Richardson, Dennis Smith, and David (Monica) Smith, thirteen grandchildren Anthony Musso, Angela (Terry) Wiley, Paul (Brooke) Musso, Ryleigh Musso, Brittany (George) Thomas, Brett Reese, Sydney (Taylor) Clotiaux, Randal “Randi” Smith, Mason Smith, Uriah Pate, Amber Pate, Bryn Smith, and Terin Smith, and 10 great grandchildren.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents, Randolph & Gussie Smith, brother Carlos Smith, and son in law Michael Owen.

Randy graduated from Carr Central High School in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1953 and went on to attend LSU, earning a Bachelors in Music Education and a Masters in Guidance Counseling. At LSU he met the love of his life, Dottie, and they were married on August 11, 1956. He was the Band Director at Istrouma High School for several years and then became a guidance counselor at Sherwood Junior High School until 1971.

Following that he worked in the field of standardized testing and assessment in the southeastern states and was known for the trusting professional relationships he built in the many school systems where he worked. He also created wonderful relationships with his team members across the three organizations he worked with until his retirement in 1991 – Science Research Associates, CTB McGraw-Hill, and Harcourt- Brace. He was a long-serving member of the leadership team for the Gulf States Oil and Gas Invitational and managed the golf tournament for many years.

Randy enjoyed music throughout his entire life, both vocal and instrumental. He was a founding member of the Baton Rouge Concert Band, a member of the Baton Rouge Symphony and Symphony Chorus, as well as the Baton Rouge Music Club Chorus. Most importantly, he served God in his church. Over the course of time, he served at Saint Augustine’s and Saint Luke’s in Baton Rouge, Trinity Episcopal, Yazoo City, Mississippi and Saint Margaret’s in Baton Rouge. His gift of music and faithful service to the choirs at these Episcopal churches are evidence of his faith. Randy’s service will be held at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church on Friday, October 14, 2022, with visitation at 10:00 a.m. and the service at 11:00 a.m. The family would like to thank the staff of Francois Bend Assisted Living for their loving care of our sweet “Pops,” and would also like to thank the friends who have been so faithful in visiting Randy.
