Earlene V. Norwood

Earlene Norwood went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at the age of 92. She was born in Wewoka, Oklahoma, in 1930, to Elba Katherine Vowell and Earl Lafayette Vowell. At the age of 18, she met and married Gene Norwood. Together they had three children – Larry, Susan and Janet. After living in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, they moved to Baton Rouge in 1969 where she lived the remaining years of her life. She was “Gammy Lene” to 8 grandchildren: Lori, Summer, Jeremy, Amy, Josh, Kristy, Andy and Adam; 22 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her father, Earl; her mother, “Jane”; her husband, Gene; her brother, Jimmy; her son, Larry; her brother-in-law, Royce; and her grandson-in-law, Clay.

Earlene was known all her life for her beauty, poise, grace, elegance, style, and impeccable taste. She was truly a lovely person. But, more importantly, she was known for her love for the Lord and her absolute dependance on His Word. She was primarily a homemaker, but she did hold several administrative jobs through the years. She began teaching Bible Studies and Sunday School when her kids were teenagers and continued that service to the Lord for many years. “Gammy Lene” was gracious, loving, forgiving, understanding, content, thankful, and kind. She will always be remembered for her love for people and her love for Jesus. Her favorite thing to talk about was Heaven, and so we rejoice that she is now there with her Lord.

To My Daughter Earlene –

Twenty-four years ago today

You made me very glad

For ‘twas on that very day

That you made me a dad

This day they say belongs to you

And that’s might fine

But twenty-four years ago

The day and you were mine

I relive again today

That yesterday of old

I pack around the years gone by

And let the past unfold

I see you in your daddy’s arms

Upon your Mother’s knee

I see you scooting on the floor

And smiling up in glee

I see you now begin to walk

Tottering from chair to chair

My heart is filled with pride and love

No child is half so fair

Well, my dear, I must come back

I’ve duties here to do

Though I’d love to go on living

In that vivid past with you

Remember this my lovely one

While all the ages roll

I love you sweet, with all my heart

With all my heart and soul

Lots of love on your birthday –

From your Dad
