Alvin M. Phillips, Jr.

Alvin M. Phillips, Jr., a native of Shreveport, LA, and a resident of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away on June 1, 2022, at the age of 91. He was a veteran who proudly served in the United States Army. Alvin earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma and a Master’s degree from Louisiana State University. He retired from the LSU Department of Geology after 40 years of dedicated service as a micropaleontologist and curator. Alvin’s thirst for knowledge continued as he would take trade classes for pleasure. Prior to the advancement of his dementia, he was a collector of many things- stamps and rocks were only a couple. Alvin had many hobbies, such as beekeeping, gardening, cycling, and LSU sports. Although Alvin was a man of few words, his love for his family and friends was evident by his generosity and always being there for all those who needed him. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lillian and Alvin M. Phillips, Sr.; brother, Jimmy Phillips; sister, Ann Phillips; son, Keith Phillips; daughter, Karen Loechelt. Survived by his wife of 67 years, JoAnn Hines Phillips; sons, R. Kevin Phillips (Michele Wilson) and R. Kyle Phillips (James Martin); daughter-in-law, Valeri Phillips; son-in-law, Gus Loechelt; grandchildren, Darcy DeBlieux, Justin Phillips, Jamie Maddie, Casey Phillips, Scott Phillips; and 9 great-grandchildren.
