Wayne Conley Guidry

Wayne Conley Guidry passed away, surrounded by family, on June 21, 2021 at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge. Wayne was born on March 10, 1944 and grew up in Grand Isle, Louisiana. He graduated Tulane Law School. He met his wife of 49 years, Marsha “Pepper” Guidry and was married 6 weeks later in 1972.

He was preceded in death by his parents Louis “Crince” and Augusta Guidry as well as his older siblings Audrey Guidry Mader Friel and Ralph James Guidry.

Wayne lived in Grand Isle until 1999 where he served as mayor from 1976 through 1984. In 1999, he and Pepper moved to Baton Rouge.

He enjoyed growing up surrounded by his siblings and cousins in the idyllic setting of Grand Isle. He always loved duck hunting and spending time at Camp Pas Funny with his family and friends where he was the resident archivist. He also had a second “career” as the assistant baseball coach at Grand Isle High School where he could be found throwing batting practice most days during the season in the mid to late 1990s.

He is survived by his wife Pepper, his two children Laura Guidry-Canedo (Baton Rouge) and Dr. David Wayne Guidry (Salt Lake City, Utah) as well as their spouses Jorge Mario Canedo-Martinez and Anna Holmes Guidry. He is also survived by his younger brother Charles “Chuck” Guidry of Grand Isle. Most importantly, he was survived by his two true joys in life, grandchildren Juliana Marie and Jorge David Canedo. His life was re-invigorated when they were born, and he relished the time he had with them.

Wayne will be deeply missed by his family. We would like to express our sincere thanks for the excellent care he received at the end of his life at OLOL in the Neuro Critical Care ICU. The nurses, physicians, and other team members made a difficult time as comfortable as possible.

Due to the current tumultuous world, we will not be having any services at this time. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Jefferson United Methodist Church Preschool (10328 Jefferson Highway; Baton Rouge, LA 70809; 225-293-4440).
