Mary Jean Mcinnis Walker

Mary Jean McInnis Walker, age 64, passed in her sleep into the welcoming arms of her Savior on Friday May 14, 2021.  Mary was born in New Orleans on November 3, 1956 to Steve John and Edith Kirtland McInnis.  She graduated from St. Bernard High School in St. Bernard, Louisiana in 1973; studied at William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Mississippi; and, received an RN from Hinds Community College School of Nursing in 1995.

Mary enjoyed cooking, gardening, ink and pencil artwork, jewelry crafting, fishing and hunting and she was an excellent home maker.

Prior to her nursing career, Mary worked for the US Postal Service in Jackson, Mississippi.  As a nurse Mary worked with the Eye, Ear and Nose Clinic in Gulfport, the Fred McMillan Retinal Specialist in Jackson as well as the University Medical Center and the Mississippi Methodist Rehab Center.

In her final weeks Mary realized her greatest calling in life.  From her perspective as a patient with an incurable disease, she felt she should mentor young nurses in caring for and listening to the terminally ill patients in their charge.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Steve and Edith McInnis; her brother, John Walter McInnis; and, her sister, Judith McInnis Gaudry.  She is survived by her brother, Thomas George McInnis (Linda Ann) of Alabaster, Alabama and her sister, Linda Edith McInnis Lucas (Ernie) of Pass Christian, Mississippi.  Mary had many nieces and grandnieces, nephews and grandnephews.  She also leaves behind her loving pups: Gracie, Cricket and Buddy.

Mary had her momma’s smile and she displayed it along with her own keen sense of humor up to her final hours.  She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of Our Lady of the Lakes Hospital in Baton Rouge who cared for and comforted Mary.

An intimate family gathering will be held in Mary’s honor.
