Judith Ponson

Judith Agatha Ponson, 82, affectionately known as “JuJu,” was born on October 8, 1938, to Lloyd and Evelina Berthaut Ponson, Algiers, LA. She departed this life peacefully on April 7, 2021 surrounded by her children at her home, Gonzales Healthcare, Gonzales, LA, after a lengthy battle with congestive heart failure. 

Judy was a graduate of Martin Behrman High School. She spent most of her life in Algiers, LA, and Belle Chasse, LA, before residing in Fluker, LA, and Gonzales, LA.

She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Belle Chasse, LA, and served as Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Altar Society, and a volunteer at the OLPH School fair for many years. Judy was also a member of Belle Chasse Council of Aging and served on the Plaquemines Parish Community Action Advisory Board. Professionally, she was a past employee of Dresser Atlas, Cudd Pressure Control, and State Farm Insurance.

Judy is survived by her children, Todd Ferniz Sr. (Carol) of Belle Chasse, LA, and Cindy Ferniz Decuir (David) of Gonzales, LA; grandchildren Jordan Ferniz, Andrew Ferniz, Erika Wigstrom, Todd Ferniz Jr., and Jodi Ferniz; step-grandchildren Stephen Landry, Marsha Cazes (Jerod) and Douglas Decuir; great-granddaughter Chloe Summers; step-great grandchildren Jason, Joshua, Jude, and John Cazes; sister Pamela Helmstetter; and brothers Jerry (Shannon) and Richard (Donna) Ponson.

Ms. Ponson is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Penelope Ponson and Jackie Schubert Loetzerich, her beloved son Bryan Ferniz, and great-grandson Lucas.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, May 15, 2021, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 8968 Hwy. 23, Belle Chasse, LA. The rosary will be prayed at 10:00 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. with Father Kyle Dave officiating. Respectful of current guidelines, all attendees must wear their own mask/face covering and practice social distancing. Internment will be private at a later date.

The family extends their forever gratitude to Gonzales Healthcare and its employees for allowing the last year of our mother’s life to be a comfortable and joyful one despite the Covid-19 quarantine.

Family and friends are encouraged to share their condolences, stories and memories by visiting Church Funeral Services & Crematory St. Amant, LA. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Belle Chasse, LA.
